Halloween Fun and Our Pumpkin Investigation!!!

"Both pumpkins are hard, but the small one feels bumpy"

The small pumpkin is 3 cubes tall and the big pumpkin is 12 cubes tall

Many students predicted that the big pumpkin would sink and the little pumpkin would float.  To our surprise, both pumpkins floated!!!

Most students guess that the small pumpkin would have a few seeds inside of it

However, we discovered
                               that it didn't have any
                              seeds inside of it at
                             all!!!

When the students explored the inside of the large pumpkin they said it felt, "Cold, wet, gooey, slimy and squishy"

Through exploration, we discovered that the large pumpkin had 196 seeds inside of it

It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's............Spaghetti Squash???

When we first showed these to the class and asked, "What do you think these are?" it was interesting to see how they used their schema to make a guess!!!

They are in fact, Spaghetti Squash.

Did you know that Spaghetti Squash is a fruit???

We worked together to prepare the Spaghetti Squash to cook in the oven.  First we have to wash the squash.  Then we have to cut the squash in half.  After, we have to take the seeds out.

We then put olive oil, salt and pepper on the Spaghetti Squash.

Finally, we put the Spaghetti Squash on a baking sheet and placed them in the oven for 40 minutes at 400 F.

Some students loved the squash and asked for seconds, while other students were more interested in exploring its texture!!!

While watching YouTube videos on how to cook Spaghetti Squash, one student suggested that we "plant the seeds like flower seeds."  So this week, we will be planting the seeds and observing if/how they grow!!! Stay tuned...!!!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!
