Why Do Leaves Change Colour?

Have you ever wondered why leaves change colour in the Fall? Our students learned that in the Summer leaves have lots of chlorophyll. That's the stuff that makes leaves really green in colour. During the Fall, leaves change colour because they don't have as much chlorophyll inside of them

Hopping Corn Experiment

 

The science behind this activity is that when we mix baking soda and vinegar together, they react to produce a gas called carbon dioxide. The gas forms bubbles in the water which circle around the corn kernels.  The bubbles lift the kernels up to the surface and when they get there they pop and then sink again.

We went on a Fall scavenger hunt.  We found, red leaves, yellow leaves,

brown leaves, acorns, sticks, bugs and pinecones.

We made apple cinnamon scented play dough last week and the students also wanted to make yellow play dough. After observing the apples they brought in, they decided they wanted to try mixing the red and yellow play dough to make still life 3D sculptures of different varieties of apples.
